Top 10 Edinburgh Photo Spots

Calton Hill - Best Views in Edinburgh

When I am asked what are my favorite Edinburgh photo spots I instinctively want to say EVERYWHERE!  Seriously, everywhere you turn in Edinburgh there is opportunity for a great photo. But if I had to give you a short list of my favorite locations, then these would make my top Edinburgh Photo Spots:

1.- Calton Hill – Favorite Edinburgh Photo Spot for Sunset

If I had to pick just one place to go watch the sunset in Edinburgh then Calton Hill would be it. It is close to the city center and not difficult to climb. And it provides some of the most amazing panoramic views of Edinburgh.

Favorite views to photograph from Calton Hill are the one Down Princes Street (shown below) and the view of Old Town & Edinburgh Castle from behind the Dugald Stewart Monument (which is modeled on Greek architecture).

There are several other monuments located at the top that will be of interest. For views even further up then a climb to Nelson monument is in order. It is open during the day and there are 143 steps to the top.

Alternatively, you can sit on the walls of the National Monument (this is the one that looks like the Parthenon in Athens) and enjoy the sunset from there.

So while a visit to Calton Hill is great any time of the day there is no better Edinburgh Photo Spot than Calton Hill for sunset.

2.- Circus Lane – The Cutest Wee Lane in Edinburgh

Crazy to think that what is now one of the cutest streets in Edinburgh used to be where they kept stables for horses. And as far as Edinburgh photo spots go this is a must, it won’t take much time and you can get some beautiful photos on your way to get coffee or lunch.

Circus Lane is one of those places that has been hyped up and is all over instagram. Therefore I was a bit wary that it would disappoint me in real life. However, it is actually worth a visit.  It is not much more than a wee lane. But what it lacks in length it makes up for in charm. It is a pretty cobblestoned lined street, with cute houses, lots of greenery and a clock tower.  And definitely worth spending at least 15 min for a quick stroll and a few clicks.

My favorite angle, which is also possibly the most common one, shows St. Stephens Clock in the back. It will incorporate the slight curve with some houses and flowers. However, you can definitely get creative and spend some time finding different angles.

P.S.: Pleased keep in mind that Circus Lane is a residential area now so try to be discreet and do not disturb its residents.

3.- Dean Village – Stepping Into a Story Book

This enchanting little village is a beautiful oasis in the city.  It is probably my favorite location for photography in all of Edinburgh because it is simply enchanting and full of possibility. Quaint houses in cute shapes, a beautiful river running between it, and lots of cute corners with flowers that provide color. I could spend hours here alone and walking the path along the river.

4.- Makars Court/The Writers Museum – Hidden Closes

Makar's Court and Writers Museum

I absolutely love courtyards and this one is found by taking Lady Stair’s Close from Lawnmarket (Royal Mile) down to the Writers Museum. While on the topic of closes, do make sure to explore as many as you can, some have wonderful surprises at the end of them, like this museum and courtyard for example. It is not only a wonderful place for photography in Edinburgh but if you look closely you will find quotes from famous Scottish writers inscribed in the pavement.

5.- Ramsay Garden – For Urban Style

Location, location, location. Ramsay Garden is a desirable block of 16 apartment buildings situated on Castlehill and overlooking Edinburgh’s New Town. Being right by Edinburgh Castle you can take a quick detour to admire the residences and snap a few pictures.

6.- Ross Fountain/Princes Street Garden

Ross Fountain in Princes Gardens

I love this spot in Edinburgh for photography because it is so versatile. You have gardens and greenery, castle views and the cool fountain. You can get so many different angles and different seasons provide even more variety.  For example different flowers planted around the fountain in summer provide a great pop of color.  It also offers fantastic views of the castle. You won’t want to miss it as it is one of the best Edinburgh photo spots around.

7.- School of Divinity – Old School Architecture

School of Divinity Edinburgh

The beautiful neo-gothic style of the School of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh makes for a beautiful location for photography. On rainy days it is moody and bringing a prop like a bright umbrella can make for a striking image with just a pop of color. The location is close to the Camera Obscura which is a fun museum with a rooftop that offers on of the best views in Edinburgh.

8.- Stockbridge Market Arch

Stockbridge Market Arch

This lovely archway which makes for a great backdrop for photos is found in Stockbridge.  It is a beautiful and historical part of Edinburgh with a market since the early 1820’s. I love the columns, the arch and the details. It makes for a great family portrait spot.

9.- The Vennel Steps – The Non-Hidden Gem

The Vennel Steps

Not much of a hidden gem as its a well known spot and you will probably encounter at least one more photographer capturing images here. It is actually an alleyway with lots of steps that leads into the popular Grassmarket area. The Vennel is one of the best castle viewpoints in all of Edinburgh and it makes for a great Edinburgh photo spot.   It photographs well at almost any hour of the day and looks particularly beautiful once the sun starts setting, the lights turn on and the castle is illuminated.

10.- Victoria Street – Most Colorful Street in Edinburgh

Victoria Street

One of my favorite streets in Edinburgh is Victoria Street. The curves, the colors, the shops, and even the uneven cobblestones. It all comes together perfectly and provides great opportunities for photography. Interestingly it is said to have influenced J.K Rowling’s Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter novels.

So get creative as this is one of the best Edinburgh photo spots in any weather conditions. The colors on the shop fronts pop in the sun. And the cobblestones glisten and shine in the rain. But beware, this is a busy street, so your best chance to photograph it without crowds or cars is early morning.
