During my last visit to Scotland I decided that I would go on an epic road trip and take on the highlights of the North Coast 500. For those who don’t know, the North Coast 500 is Scotland’s answer to Route 66. It is a circular coastal route that takes you through the North West of Scotland. With over 500 miles of mostly single track roads, stunning beaches, spectacular mountains and overall breathtaking scenery. There is so much to see and do during this epic Scotland road trip.
Although I have been asked many times for an itinerary I feel that itineraries (especially in this case) are not one size fits all. Itineraries are very personal. For many the road trip from Miami to Key West ends at mile marker 0. However, 70 miles past Key West is one of the least visited yet most spectacular National Parks in the USA. I have lived in South Florida for over 20 years and Key West is a great destination for a weekend getaway. Yet embarrassingly enough I had not visited Dry Tortugas. Undoubtedly, Skye has some of the most majestic landscapes I have ever seen. A rugged countryside filled with magic. From castles, to lochs, to mountain and glens, it seemingly has it all. It’s also very crowded especially during the summer months. And while I love Skye, I do not however love crowds. Therefore, I decided to go on an Isle of Skye tour that would be unique and transport me away from the masses.
During my recent trip to Scotland I decided to do the unconventional and spend a day in the Scottish Borders. I went south into the lowlands instead of north into the highlands. And what I found surpassed my every expectation. I was completely blown away by the historic abbeys, beautiful stately homes, quaint small towns, fascinating towers and castles, rolling hills, and a beautiful coastline. Best of all, none of the crowds you normally find during the summer months. So, if you are planning a trip to Scotland I urge you to take the path less traveled. Be different and spend at least a day in the Scottish Borders.
