During my last visit to Scotland I decided that I would go on an epic road trip and take on the highlights of the North Coast 500. For those who don’t know, the North Coast 500 is Scotland’s answer to Route 66. It is a circular coastal route that takes you through the North West of Scotland. Undoubtedly, Skye has some of the most majestic landscapes I have ever seen. A rugged countryside filled with magic. From castles, to lochs, to mountain and glens, it seemingly has it all. It’s also very crowded especially during the summer months. And while I love Skye, I do not however love crowds. Therefore, I decided to go on an Isle of Skye tour that would be unique and transport me away from the masses.
During my recent trip to Scotland I decided to do the unconventional and spend a day in the Scottish Borders. I went south into the lowlands instead of north into the highlands. And what I found surpassed my every expectation. I was completely blown away by the historic abbeys, beautiful stately homes, quaint small towns, fascinating towers and castles, rolling hills, and a beautiful coastline. Best of all, none of the crowds you normally find during the summer months. So, if you are planning a trip to Scotland I urge you to take the path less traveled. Be different and spend at least a day in the Scottish Borders.

Or maybe it is the rugged coastline with its jagged edges, or the ocean waves that like my spirit are a bit wild. Perhaps its the rain itself which seems to cleanse my soul and wash my tears away. I can’t say exactly what it is, but Scotland brings a smile to my face and fills my heart with joy. Scotland is my Happy Place and if you give it a chance it could be your Happy Place to.

Will you dare to visit Skye in winter? Skye seems to have it all. Spectacular landscapes that are every photographers dream. Amazing hikes with breathtaking views at every turn. Fresh food and award winning restaurants. Picturesque towns with friendly people. Miles of beautiful beaches. A lighthouse, a distillery, castles, waterfalls….the list goes on. It is no wonder it is one of the most popular travel destinations in Scotland for tourists and locals alike.
As a mater of fact Skye is actually the 2nd most popular tourist destination after Edinburgh. But if you visit Skye in winter you will notice that the number of visitors drops off dramatically. It seems as if only the brave will venture out for a visit. Admittedly, Skye is a different beast in winter. Many of its historic buildings close for the season. The sun rises late and sets early. The temperatures drop and the roads can be a bit dangerous. So why would you want to visit Sky in the winter?
